BANGI, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- A consultant will be appointed to determine a new direction, organisation and structure of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) to meet current changes.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said previously, MARA obtained assistance from other agencies under the ministry, like Bank Rakyat, but that the situation had now changed.
"Previously, the support agencies are under one roof, but now there is no support agency under our new structure and we have to look into the direction so that MARA will remain effective," he said at the ministry's monthly assembly here on Friday.
In another development, Shafie said efforts were being made by the ministry to build and upgrade facilities in the rural areas to fulfill the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) expectations by 2012.
The projects included building 1,500km of roads in Sabah and Sarawak, providing quality water to 90 percent of Sabah and Sarawak and ensure electricity supply to 95 percent of Sabah and Sarawak, he added.
He said the government would also build 50,000 units of houses for the hardcore poor. -- BERNAMA
