Sufiah's mum to advise govt

KUALA LUMPUR: Halimahton Yusof, the mother of five child geniuses, has been roped in to help in the Permata Negara and Permata Pintar programmes.

Programmes patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said Halimahton would use her experience and knowledge to help improve the programmes which are aimed at developing the nation's human capital.

Halimahton, the mother of Maths genius-turned-social escort Sufiah Yusof, will be helped by her 23-year-old son Iskander Ibrahim.

"I have explained to both of them about the programmes and they have agreed to identify the areas where they can advise and help provide more information for us, whenever necessary," said the prime minister's wife at her home here, yesterday.

"But this is more like voluntary help than consultancy. We see it as their contribution to the country and the society."

Rosmah had earlier spent about one hour with the mother and son to discuss the next meeting where they can talk at length on the syllabus of the programmes.

Both programmes, spearheaded by Rosmah, focus on early childhood care and education, including the setting up of Malaysia's first school for gifted children.

Rosmah said Halimahton and her son would not only extend their expertise in Mathematics but also in other fields.

"She will show the correct path for parents with gifted children so that no one else will go through her predicament," Rosmah said.

Halimahton and her family have been making headlines since 24-year-old Sufiah, who was accepted by Oxford University at the age of 13, left her studies to become a social escort.

Halimahton said she would be helping on the practical side while her son would do the talking.

"Iskander will be able to explain what I taught them when they were 2 to 3 years old.

I don't believe in teaching every child in a single way. We cannot force them. Let them enjoy themselves while learning." - NST
