KOTA BARU: Students should be actively involved in non-governmental organisations, including student councils, as a means of “exploring the horizon,” International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said.

This would them equip themselves with additional knowledge, he said.

“They must also be role models and mentors to those under their tutelage to help the country achieve developed nation status by 2020,” he said.

Mustapa, who is also Kelantan Umno liaison chief, also said that the Government was in the process of drafting a strategic plan to groom about one million students at higher learning institutions to become future leaders of the country.

He said the move was necessary to groom sincere and knowledgeable leaders as they would be the ones to determine the future direction of the country.

“This is a challenge that about one million students at higher learning institutions in the country must shoulder,” Mustapa said at a meet-the-leaders session in SMK Sultan Ismail here on Wednesday.

Deputy Finance Minister Senator Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, Kelantan’s Federal Development Department director Datuk Mohd Shukri Salleh and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Zainal Mohamed were among other leaders who attended the session. -- The Star
