A(H1N1): 587 flu-like cases being treated; no new deaths

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 587 influenza-like illness (ILI) cases are currently being treated at 74 hospitals nationwide, Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said Tuesday.

Of the total, only 169 cases or 29 percent were confirmed Influenza A(H1N1) cases, he said in the ministry's website.

However, no new H1N1 death was recorded and the death toll remained at 77.

Of the total ILI cases undergoing treatment, 28 were treated in the incentive care Uuits (ICU) with 26 having risk factors like children below 5 years old (9), chronic disease (5), obesity (6), chronic respiratory disease (4) and pregnancy (2) he said.

On the global scenario, he said that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there were 296,471 Influenza A(H1N1) cases worldwide as of last Friday, with at least 3,486 deaths.

Mohd Ismail advised the public to continue observing the H1N1 safety guidelines during the festive celebration, and for the ILI cases to isolate themselves and get complete rest at home until all the symptoms were gone. - The Star
