ALOR SETAR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- FAMA targets to set up 500 farmer's markets nationwide by next year, with sales totalling RM500 million a year.

FAMA Chairman Datuk Paduka Badruddin Amiruldin said setting up more markets would give the farmers a chance to sell their produce direct to consumers at reasonable prices.

As of July this year, 339 farmers' markets involving 16,000 participants were in operation, chalking up sales of over RM282 million, or about RM47 million a month, he told reporters after meeting the people at the agro bazaar in Mergong here.

On the agro bazaar which involved seven entrepreneurs, he said it had recorded average sales of RM450,000 a month since its opening in July.

This success had prompted Fama to to plan for 13 more agro bazaars specially to sell agrobased and small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) products, bringing the total to 40 by year end, he said.

He also said that Fama had chosen 95 farmers' markets in strategic places to operate for three days starting Thursday to sell necessities for Aidilfitri. -- BERNAMA
