KUALA LUMPUR: The SP Setia Foundation is investing RM32,800 to provide 10 Klang Valley schools with copies of the New Straits Times.

The charity arm of SP Setia Bhd is sponsoring a total of 41,000 newspapers for the schools over the next year beginning this month, through the NST School Sponsorship programme.

Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the foundation used 60 per cent of its funds for education as their main priority.

"With globalisation, it is very important to pick up as many languages as possible. The fastest and easiest way to learn is through newspaper reading.

"We want to help young Malaysians to improve their English. They need to master English to progress and communicate with the rest of the world," he said at the cheque presentation ceremony at Balai Berita here yesterday.

He said since the foundation was set up in 2000, it had spent over RM15 million on the Setia Adoption Programme, sponsoring 6,174 needy schoolchildren.

The schools selected to receive the NST in this programme are Sekolah Kebangsaan Brickfields 2, SK Puchong Jaya, SK Pusat Bandar Puchong 2, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Tiong Hua Kok Bin in Klang, SJK (C) Han Ming, Puchong, SJK (C) St Teresa, Brickfields, SJK (C) Confucian, SJK (T) Ladang Kinrara, SJK (T) Castlefield, Puchong, and SJK (T) Sentul.

Lee said he would ask the board of the foundation to consider making this an annual programme. - NST
