Foundation gives RM104,000 in loans and scholarships

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce Charity Foundation yesterday gave RM104,000 in loans and scholarships to deserving students.

Of the amount, RM57,000 was given out as loans to five students while another 47 students received RM1,000 each in scholarships.

The foundation's chairman, Datuk Dr Cheah See Kian, said the interest-free loans, introduced in 1978, had benefited 300 students. More than RM2 million had been given out.

"Almost all the applicants repaid the loans on schedule after the completion of their studies," he said in his speech during the ceremony held at Han Chiang College yesterday.

Also present was PCCC president Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping.

As for the scholarships, Cheah said from 2005 to this month, RM182,000 had been given out to 182 students.

He commended the commitment by the government in disbursing student loans under the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) totalling RM25 billion, which has benefited 1.26 million students. - NST
