MUAR: Companies and rich individuals have been urged to help in-community rehabilitation centres which care for special children in the country.

Leong Hup Holdings executive director Tan Sri Francis Lau said children who suffer from physical or mental deformities were actually smart.

He said people should not look down upon these children and appealed to all not to deprive them of care, love and comfort as they too wanted to live a normal life.

“We are fortunate to have in-community rehabilitation centres with committed teachers and trained and caring staff to care for these children.

“I sincerely call on companies and individuals to come forward to help these centres,” he said after treating 300 special children and their teachers to a buka puasa and dinner here on Friday.

Lau said they could contribute cash for the centres to buy exercise equipment, learning materials, including books and food for the children.

He said Leong Hup Holdings had been treating children at four centres - PDK Sungai Abong, PDK Parit Keroma, PDK Bukit Naning and PDK Maharani - since 1995.

Besides buka puasa and a dinner of nasi minyak with mutton and chicken curry, Lau also presented goodies and duit raya to the children, their teachers and RM1,000 to each centre. - The Star
