TELUK INTAN, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Perak, which was once a major producer of tin ore, now has the potential of becoming the biggest producer of gold in the country.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said based on the preliminary report by a task force studying Perak's gold mining potential, there might be gold deposits in the state that could be commercially mined.

"The study is still on and we are waiting for the final report," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council's weekly meeting at the Hilir Perak Administrative Complex, here, on Wednesday.

Asked where the gold deposits were, he said he could not divulge the areas, but an expert had met him recently to discuss with him, Perak's potential in gold mining.

On the sugar supply shortage, Zambry said Perak had registered a 12 per cent demand increase for the essential item over the last few weeks due to consumers preparing for Ramadan and Hari Raya, among the factors.

He said the state government had asked the relevant ministry to increase the sugar supply quota for Perak by another 20 per cent.

State Health, Local Government, Environment, Public Transportation and Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, said generally the sugar supply in the state was adequate except for certain areas and action was being taken to solve the shortage.

He said the normal daily consumption of sugar in Perak was 230 tonnes while the amount in the market was 537 tonnes. -- BERNAMA
