KUALA KRAI, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Koperasi Bekas Tentera Malaysia (Kobtema) Kuala Krai Bhd has taken a step into the business field with the launch of its coffee "Kopi Komando" to help bring in income for the ex-servicemen cooperative and its members.

Chairman of Kobtema Kuala Krai, Abd Halim Abd Rahman said the entry into business has been supported by a beverage company here, Kota Kenali Sdn Bhd which will provide the capital to produce the coffee.

"We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kota Kenali and through this joint venture, Kota Kenali will be the provider of capital for producing the coffee while Kobtema Kuala Krai will market the product.

"From the sales of the product, Kota Kenali will give a monthly royalty to Kobtema Kuala Krai which will indirectly provide side income for the cooperative and also the opportunity for members of the cooperative to earn extra income," he told Bernama here on Friday.

With this, the cooperative, which has been seeing income through contract works will now be able to increase its income by between RM300 and RM400 a month through the royalty payment, Abd Halim said.

Part proceeds from the sale of the coffee will be also contributed to the the Tabung Hari Pahlawan.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Kota Kenali, Mohd Roslan Puteh said the Kopi Komando was a coffee pre-mix containing Tongkat Ali and Habbatus Sauda. He said the product was only the first project for the joint venture and more products will be introduced later on.

"We are also planning on several strategies to promote Kopi Komando such as appointing sales agents to penetrate the market including the army camps throughout the country," he said.

He said apart from the royalty payment, the company was also discussing the possibility of providing bonus to Kobtema Kuala Krai based on the sales volume.

Meanwhile, Director of the Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia Kelantan, Wan Muhammad Sabri Wan Harun when contacted, commended the initiative taken by Kobtema Kuala Krai to venture into the business sector to supplement their income.

"The step taken by Kobtema Kuala Krai is commendable and we hope it will receive the cooperation and support of all ex-servicemen in the country," he said. -- BERNAMA
